ULTIMATE OUTLANDER
EXPERIENCE

from Inverness and Edinburgh

The Ultimate Outlander Experience is a 2-Day Outlander Tour taking you to the famous filming locations and also to historic sites with links to the series. An added bonus is that we also visit the not-to-be-missed Glencoe, Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness.

The tour can be started in Edinburgh or in Inverness, spending the night in the alternate city and ending where you began.  Starting the tour in Edinburgh, the tour itinerary would look something like this:

Day 1 (when leaving from Edinburgh)

Get picked up in a comfortable car from your accommodation in Edinburgh at 8am.

By 9am we are visiting Midhope Castle. This 16th century tower house is used as Lallybroch, Jamie's family home.

Next we see Blackness Castle, the scene of Fort William in Seasons 1 & 2. It was here Jamie was whipped by Black Jack Randall.

On to Linlithgow Palace, where the infamous Wentworth Prison is filmed. Until maintenance works are completed, we are only able to pass by.

Not far along we come to Doune Castle, aka "Castle Leoch" seat of Clan Mackenzie. Used often in the series, you will recognise the grounds, interior courtyard, great hall and kitchen. Doune Castle has also been a filming location for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Outlaw King and Game of Thrones.

After lunch we arrive at Glencoe. Although the story does not take place here, you may recognise the mountains seen in the opening credits.

Heading north we arrive by mid-afternoon at Urquhart Castle, on the shores of Loch Ness. The Jacobite Rebellions received much of their support in the Highlands, and in the late 17th century government troops were stationed at Urquhart Castle to attempt to keep the locals under control. When they gave up the castle in 1692 they blew up the gatehouse, so the castle would have been in ruins by the time Jamie and Claire met.

We continue up towards Beauly stopping first at Wardlaw Mausoleum, intended to be the burial place of Old Fox, Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat (Jamie's grandfather). We can go into the underground crypt to see his coffin.

Our last tour stop for the day is at Beauly Priory, the ruins of a 12th century monastery. Claire meets the seer here.

Around 6pm, we will drop you at your accommodation in Inverness.

Day 2

Get collected from your accommodation at 8am to begin another day of adventure! In just a few minutes we'll be at Old High Church of St Stephens on the banks of the River Ness. This is where Jacobite prisoners were held after the Battle of Culloden until execution. You can still see the musket ball marks in the wall of the church and in some of the gravestones.

Then we pass by Balnain House, St Mary's Church, and Abertarff House for photos as requested. Unfortunately these places do not have frequent opening times for visitors.

Then we explore Clava Cairns, 4,000 year old burial cairns surrounded by standing stones, considered to be the inspiration for Craig Na Dun. Look for the split stone, just be careful not to be swept back in time a few centuries!

We then visit nearby Culloden Battlefield, site of the final battle of the Jacobite Rebellions in which approximately 1,300 lives were lost - 1,250 of them Jacobites. You can see the Clan Fraser stone which Claire visits in "Dragonfly in Amber."

We will lunch at the House of Bruar, or optionally we may stop by the Highland Folk Museum. One of the townships at the Highland Folk Museum was used as a set for filming, and you feel like you're walking right onto the set!

By early afternoon we will be in Falkland, where they filmed 1940's Inverness.

Next we stop by Culross, the rustic village used in many scenes as Cranesmuir. Also Claire's herb garden was filmed here, as was the Black Kirk.

By 6pm, we will return to your accommodation in Edinburgh with 2 days of non-stop Outlander memories.

Subject to availability. Does not include entrance fees, accommodation or meals. If desired, we can assist with recommending accommodation in either location.
